Abstract

The educational reform in contemporary institutions of general secondary education in Ukraine, amidst global challenges, is aimed at improving the quality of education through the active implementation of personal and competency-oriented learning, upbringing, and development of students. This publication is dedicated to defining the artistic aspect of ten key competencies of today’s adolescent students, as outlined in the “New Ukrainian School” concept. The authors examine students’ key competencies (communication in the state and native languages, if different, and foreign languages; competencies in natural sciences and technology; information and digital literacy; social and civic competencies; initiative and entrepreneurship; general cultural, mathematical and environmental literacy, and the ability to learn throughout life) in light of the modern realities and requirements of the New Ukrainian School. They analyse the specifics of forming key competencies in art lessons and provide an argument for the developmental potential of art in shaping the personality
of adolescent students. The authors explore the characteristics of adolescence, thoroughly describe the history of the competency-based approach in education, present their own views on the challenges in arts education, and pay special attention to the methodological tools of the New Ukrainian School. This includes shifting from an educational paradigm of reproductive knowledge acquisition to a child-centered pedagogy of partnership. Particular attention is given to the capacity of art to influence the communicative abilities of adolescent students, to reveal talents and abilities through artistic activities in the aesthetic arts curriculum, and to foster creative self-expression in cultural activities, along with personal attributes such as initiative and entrepreneurship.
