The article highlights the activities of the Conservatory of the Galician Music Society in Lviv and its leaders, in particular, the creative and pedagogical activities of Johann Ruckgaber, Karol Mikuli, Rudolf Schwartz, Mieczysław Soltys, and their contribution to the development of professional music education in Ukraine. The prerequisites are clarified, the development of the institutional foundations of higher music education in Ukraine in the 19th - early 20th centuries is periodized in the context of Western European traditions. Within this period, the Austrian and Polish periods, as well as the period of formation of the national foundations of higher music education in Ukraine, have been distinguished. It is established that music education in Ukraine developed with the active interaction of various national cultures. Higher music education institutions emerged as multicultural environments within which a dialogue of national and European music and educational traditions took place. National education was enriched as a result of the creative and pedagogical activities of well-known figures of musical culture - representatives of other national cultures. At the same time, there was a process of establishing specifically Ukrainian national features in music education, and representatives of the Ukrainian scientific and creative intelligentsia took an active part in the development of musical culture and education in European countries.
